Beach Wheelchairs loan our manual beach wheelchairs for use at other locations and for longer periods by pre-arrangement in the low season. This has helped many families to enjoy planned holidays to special places all around Scotland. We can also provide these longer term hires to allow communities to identify the feasibility of a beach wheelchair hire scheme at their local beach.

Each request for a longer term hire will be treated on a case by case basis and will be considered looking at our other commitments and availability of equipment. Please contact us in good time in the usual way to find out whether we can help.

What you need to provide:

You will need to ensure that the wheelchair is suitable for your needs and you are able to safely transfer in and out of the wheelchair. We are unable to loan a hoist for transfers.

You will need to make sure there is suitable access onto the beach you want to visit - this may be a ramp or rough ground.

You need to be confident that the wheelchair can cope with individual beach conditions - this may include sand/ pebbles, tidal conditions and other watercourses.

You should treat the wheelchair as if it is your own and not leave it unattended when it is in your care.

You should minimise all risks including avoiding sharp stones to prevent punctures. The risk of puncture to the heavy duty rubber tyres is low but in the worst case scenario this could result in someone being stranded on the beach.

You must take responsibility for safe transportation of our manual wheelchairs. A large vehicle is likely to be required. The following information may be helpful:

DeBug - 85cm (33 inches) wide and length is 115cm (45 inches)

Sandcruiser - Overall length, including footrest 120cm (48 inches) Maximum width: 98cm (38.5 inches) Height from ground to top of handles: 102cm (40 inches).

Hippcampe - The large hippocampe is 135cm front to back length or 128cm with the wheels removed. The hippocampe can be taken apart for easier transportation as shown in the video below.

Of all our wheelchairs this is the one that is designed to get out and about! The YouTube video shows how the wheelchair may be dismantled for transport. This video shows the all terrain wheels which are smaller. You will be offered these as well as the large beach wheels which are more suitable for heavier users. Our large hippocampe is 135cm front to back length.

What we can help with:

We can help you identify which manual wheelchair may be able to suit your needs.

We will meet you at the Beach Hut or the Porty container to show you our wheelchairs and show you how you may be able to dismantle the wheelchairs as much as possible (as above).
