General Terms and Conditions

  • The Beach Wheelchair Volunteer on duty cannot assist you with the transfer to the beach wheelchair from your normal wheelchair.

  • You must ensure that the beach wheelchair is suitable for your needs.

  • Please use any straps or supports as instructed. The Beach Wheelchair Volunteer on duty can assist you in choosing the supports that may provide you with a greater level of comfort and safety.

  • You must provide someone who is fit enough to push the chair.

  • You will provide personal details of name, address, mobile number and proof of address or identification prior to the wheelchair being released. This information will be noted and returned to you when the beach wheelchair is returned to the Beach Hut at the end of the loan period.

  • Secure footwear is recommended.

  • The manual beach wheelchairs can be taken into the shallows only (6” or 15cm depth). The seat of the beach wheelchair should not be submerged. Extreme care must be taken. Please be aware of the current sea conditions and always consider that these can change at any time.

  • If at any time you have any problems or concerns with the beach wheelchair whilst it is in your care, please phone the Beach Wheelchairs Volunteer on duty immediately using the mobile number provided when you collect the wheelchair.

  • Please take care on the slipways – these are steep and uneven.

  • Take care on the beach, especially of rocks and uneven sand.

  • Take normal precautions whilst out in the sun.

x8 All Terrain Wheelchair Terms and Conditions

  • DO NOT DRIVE IN THE SEA OR IN ROCKPOOLS. THIS COULD RESULT IN CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE WHEELCHAIR AND MAY RESULT IN YOU BECOMING STRANDED. THIS COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.

  • The Beach Wheelchair provided must only be used on the West and East beach in North Berwick or on the beach at Portobello. 

  • Please do not smoke or drink in the x8. 

  • Please do not lean out to pick things up as this may affect stability of the x8.

  • The joystick hand control unit IS NOT WATERPROOF. Please use the waterproof covered if provided to you.

  • Please use any straps or supports as instructed.  

  • If you are going to be stationary in the x8 please turn off the power.

  •  Within the Harbour a max speed of 4mph is recommended.

  • On the ramps onto the beach a max speed of 2mph is recommended.

  • On the beach a max speed of 5mph may be achieved.

  • AVOID ROCKS, BOULDERS AND STEPS.

  • DO NOT DRIVE THE WHEELCHAIR BACKWARDS ON THE RAMP.

  • Ensure your wheels are free of obstructions at all times – clothing, blankets, seaweed, straps etc.

  • When traversing slopes please go up and down a slope. Do not drive along a slope.

  • Please wear the seatbelt at all times.

  • The x8 is solely for the use of those that have completed our driving test.The x8 All Terrain wheelchair

Please return the wheelchair at the agreed time. If you are going to be delayed please contact the Beach Wheelchairs Volunteer on duty using the mobile number provided when you collect the wheelchair.
